WHY? Readies ‘Sod in the Seed’ & Fall Tour w/... →
Three years after the release of the critically-acclaimed Eskimo Snow, WHY? is returning with a new EP this August and a full-length to follow shortly thereafter. Frontman Yoni Wolf had alluded to the material being more rap-heavy than WHY?’s past couple albums, and EP title track “Sod in the Seed” seems to suggest just that. Yoni sounds hungry.
You can pick up Sod in the Seed on Aug. 14 and...

Sole Drops First Single From ‘A Ruthless Criticism... →
On “Young Sole,” the first single off the forthcoming A Ruthless Criticism Of Everything Existing (taken from a Marx essay of the same name), Denver-based emcee Sole continues his assault on complacency in the face of a world on fire. For an artist as prolific as Sole, it’s hard to believe ARCOEE marks his first official solo album since 2005’s Live From Rome. “Enough with the fucking fashion...

Woodpecker - Every Boy In NY
Brooklyn-based septet Woodpecker have released the first single from their sophomore album Thanks Anyway. The background that half of the band possesses in filmmaking lends itself to a charming, absurdist treatment for “Every Boy In NY,” conceptualized by Josh Hollywood and frontman Josh Steinbauer and directed by Hollywood. The punk-inspired Americana outfit has...

Cage - "Sad Sack" (prod. by Camu Tao) →
This song is produced by Camu Tao. It is one of the last pieces of music he gave me. There is no real way to mix the music because it was a two track and the emotion in the vocals I doubt i could capture again. This was a very dark period for me and I would rather leave it how it is than try recreating the music for better vocals.

Doseone - “Thy Pattern”
Doseone’s self-directed clip for “Thy Pattern” is reminiscent of a grade-school diorama — the kind made with Model Magic, construction paper, and ample imagination. This musical presentation focuses not on the life cycle of the American Toad, but instead on the plights of a lost astronaut and his trippy transformation against a stark backdrop of static...

Portable Sunsets - California
New York producer Portable Sunsets, who describes his music as a collaboration with non-human band members of “monomes, sunlight and bits,” will release his debut LP, Mercy, next week via Daedelus’ label, Magical Properties. Sunsets’ track “Fog” recently glimmered on Daedelus’ FACT mix, and now “California” shines, with flickering arpeggio techno and casually...

Late Pass: Willis Earl Beal →
A friend put me up on the work of Willis Earl Beal this week, and I had a chance to give Acousmatic Sorcery a listen against a fitting backdrop of heavy rain and thunder last night. The fuzzy recordings sound like lost transmissions from a long-forgotten era on another planet. This dude deserves all the praise being heaped upon him.
You can still catch Willis’ XL Recordings debut...

Busdriver @ Santos Party House (Live Review) →
05.30.12
LA’s Busdriver, a staple of the city’s underground scene for the past decade plus, came through Manhattan on the heels of his weirdest album yet, Beaus$Eros The record, a complete reimagining of the artist’s vocal cords released earlier this year via Fake Four Inc, chronicles a devastating breakup and the road to recovery. Playing the downstairs stage at Santos Party House, replete...

The Heavy Guilt - "Summer Came" →
We wanted to take a moment to thank you for allowing us to exist. You folks have made the past three years of music a beautiful adventure. Our little band started as all, without a single fan, neither buzz nor momentum. We had a batch of songs, some hungry hearts and 6 driven players. We’ve been fortunate to find ears willing to take on our experiments, souls willing to push us forward...

Doseone - G Is For Deep (Review) →
Doseone has played many parts over his 25-year career. He’s been an avante-garde philosopher for Deep Puddle Dynamics, memento mori muser with Germany-Oakland hybrid 13 & God, psych-spellbinder through Subtle, and something entirely new and accessible with his Anticon solo debut G Is For Deep. Leadoff track “Dancing X” foreshadows the path ahead and gets under the skin...
